Saudi Arabia – Jeddah 2014-11-05

The Saudi Aquaculture Society in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture hosted a symposium on the commercial uses of the Biofloc Technology at the headquarters of the Fisheries Research Center in Jeddah, in the presence of His Excellency the Korean General Consul in the city of Jeddah, and representatives of some private companies working in the aquaculture sector, as well as experts from the Ministry of Agriculture, on Wednesday, November 5, 2014. In which the CEO of NEO Company, Mr. Kyu Tea Lee, gave a presentation on their company which is considered one of the few companies that succeeded in the use of biofloc technologies in the commercial production of the vannamei shrimp (L. vannamei).

Mr. Lee said that the shrimp diseases which had increased in frequency in the past few years and affected shrimp production and resulted in major losses to the shrimp farming sector, constituted a significant challenge for them and encouraged them to move forward in developing the biofloc technology as one of the best available options to produce high quality shrimp under a controlled environment, free from shrimp disease problems, and consistent with the environmental requirements .He indicated that their company was able to develop two types of biofloc systems, one of them is indoor fiberglass tanks with highly developed techniques, while the other is outdoor concrete tanks with less developed techniques.

He also stated that, within few years, starting from 2002, their company was able to reach the commercial utilization of the technology by achieving great strides in the field of research and developing its own technology for the production of bacteria and other organisms needed by the system in the company laboratories.

He added that they have requests for cooperation from a range of countries around the world interested in developing the biofloc technology for the production of shrimp, including Indonesia, Vietnam and the United States, Britain, Germany and Saudi Arabia.

This symposium comes within the joint cooperation programs carried out by the Saudi government represented by the Ministry of Agriculture with some other countries in the world that have the technology and expertise which can be benefited from.

Since its establishment, the Saudi Aquaculture Society has embarked on implementing a number of studies and proposals in order to deal with the problems of the White Spot Virus which had serious impacts on the shrimp farming projects in the Kingdom. It has also organized several symposia and workshops which serve this trend so as to maintain the sustainability of these projects.
