Signing Research Partnership Agreement between Ministry of Environment, Water, & Agriculture and KAUST to support research cooperation in fish resources and aquaculture industries

Ministry of Environment, Water, & Agriculture approved the National Program for Developing Fish Resources Sector in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia according to Council of Ministers' resolution No.(514) agreeing to launch a national program to develop fish resources sector in the kingdom. The program shall be managed by the ministry in coordination with the concerned bodies. The program's vision is to make fish resources sector one of the largest development sectors contributing in achieving sustainable development in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The objectives are represented in achieving comprehensive economic and social vision, enhancing and developing the diversity of national development, participating in supporting social security efforts through providing thousands of jobs, contributing in achieving food security, and best utilization of natural resources in sustainable development. 
In the workshop held today 11/01/1438 H in the campus of King Abdullah University for Science & Technology (KAUST) in Jeddah, His Excellency, Deputy Minister for Fishery Resources; Engineer Ahmed Al-Eiadh showed the above particulars. The workshop comes as establishment of cooperation fields with the university as a partner in developing fish resources in the kingdom as well as singing a strategic partnership between KAUST and the ministry in "Research & Development" to support KSA Vision 2030 and its objectives related to aquaculture, preparing studies about regionalizing certain types of aquatic living things with economic value, studying the problems of aquaculture in some floating cages and providing the suitable solutions. The partnership shall also prepare studies about hatching, care, and incubation of certain larvae with high economic value in Saudi Arabia as well as studying the food needs of certain fish types in the local environment. In addition, feasibility studies shall be carried on about aquaculture of certain local fish in floating cages. 
Engineer Ahmed Al-Eiadh refers that the production of fish aquaculture projects in the future shall form a basic cornerstone in national economy on completing the operation of all projects with the targeted production capacities in accordance with Development Program (2015-2013). In general, the expected increase in fish production capacity goes up gradually along with providing thousands of jobs for Saudi youth besides other outcomes and targets related to the program till 2030. 
Engineer Ahmed Al-Eiadh added that the development plan of fish resources sector targets producing (100.000) tons of aquacultured products by 2020. The majority of this production shall be of economic types that aim take party in achieving self-efficiency of fish production besides exporting the surplus. Focusing shall be made on fish aquaculture in floating cages and post-harvest field. HE thanked KAUST and its officials for their efforts done to support and develop fish resources sector and its various activities.
