HM Minister of Environment, Water, & Agriculture Abdulrahman Alfadli resolved to establish a team to develop techniques of algae production in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The founding team includes : Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) Saudi Electric Co., ARASCO, and National Aquaculture Group, and King Abdullah for Sciences & Technology  as members.

The resolution aims to take the necessary steps to develop, invest, and protect aquaculture resources in the regional water of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and encourage work in its sectors.

HM Deputy Minister for Fishery Resources stated that Minister of Environment resolution came based on  the initial meeting minute of the founding team formed to implement the project of algae production techniques in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He mentioned that the ministry's trend to invest in the field of sea algae research and production in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia came within the ministry seeking to maintain national resources in the kingdom over a journey of researches and studies continued 4 years ago.

He stated that the ministry continues in the projects of algae aquaculture in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as a base of renewable resources as well as seeking to achieve sustainability in fodder industry in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia using sea water. In addition, it shall reduce the costs of cultured aquatic products and improve the quality of fodder used in all agricultural sector. He assured that algae have many merits and advantages such as their use in nutritional components and multiple fatty acids and omega 3 besides their use in many products like cosmetics.

Eng. Aleyadah explained that Kingdom of Saudi Arabia enjoys relative merits qualifying it to be a pioneer in this field. Saudi Arabia has low cost power sources and its climate is suitable to this kind of aquaculture as well as the availability of algae suitable to be cultured in the kingdom. In addition, there are suitable sea water, nonagricultural lands on the coast of Saudi Arabia enabling the kingdom to establish algae aquaculture projects.
