The launch of a joint campaign by a number of concerned authorities to inspect the markets and shops selling fish in the city of Dammam, during which quantities of fish unfit for consumption were confiscated and destroyed, and a number of shops that did not comply with the standards were violated, in continuation of the efforts made by the Saudi Aquaculture Society in cooperation with its partners in the National Committee for Monitoring Markets Fish and its products.
Today, Wednesday, January 1, 2020, an inspection campaign for fish markets in the Eastern Province was launched with the participation of a number of relevant authorities, including the Saudi Aquaculture Association, the General Administration of Fisheries, the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture in the Eastern Province, and the Fisheries Research Center in Qatif.
The Ministry of Commerce, the Central Dammam Municipality, the Qatif Municipality, the Food and Drug General Authority branch, and the Qatif Police. Where the team toured and inspected the fish shops in the fish market in Dammam and Qatif.
The team was able to seize, violate and destroy a number of fish unfit for human consumption and penalize a number of shops that violate the requirements and standards of quality and food safety. The outcome of what was seized during the campaign included the confiscation and destruction of 80 kilograms of shrimp, 351 kilograms of fish and 104 kilograms of fish fillets. It was affiliated with two institutions against which the necessary violations were issued according to the rules and regulations for violations of commercial fraud.
The violations that were monitored by the committee today consisted of seizing fish of unknown origin, displaying the owner unfit for human consumption, and recording cases related to cover-up, commercial fraud, and others.
At the end of the tour, the team formed by the bodies emanating from the National Committee for Monitoring Fish Markets and Fish Products in the Kingdom emphasized the continuation of monitoring all fish markets in various regions in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and intensifying efforts during the coming period in order to ensure that consumers obtain fish products with the highest quality. Standards and requirements for quality and food safety, preserving the rights of consumers of fish products in the Kingdom, and limiting any practices that violate the regulations and legislation related to the protection of consumer rights.
