In the Saudi Council of Ministers meeting held on Monday 23/1/1436 H, headed by HRH Crown Prince, the council approved establishing a national program to develop fish resources in the kingdom. The program shall be managed by Ministry of Agriculture in coordination with certain related authorities.
It should be noted that Agricultural Development Fund in association with Ministry of Agriculture launched the seventh initiation as a comprehensive national strategy to develop fish resources in the kingdom and enhance the sector's economic and development role.
The Seventh Initiation aims to create an entity to handle and market the products of fish resources sector in order to decrease costs and limit competition in the external market. In addition, the initiation seeks to maintain the high standard of quality distinguishing the kingdom and its projects, market fishers' yields from fishing or small aquaculture projects agreed to be adopted in cooperation with Ministry of Agriculture. The directive team finished the strategy to activate the sector's development plan resulting to recommend establishing an independent program to take over the mission to activate the development of the fish resources sector.
In addition, plans were drawn to develop four sectors related directly to fisheries sector; Research & Development Sector, Human Resources & Training Sector, Laws & Regulations Sector, and Financing Sector. The plan determined several quantum objectives including achievement of jobs nationalization not less than 75% of total positions in the sector which are expected to exceed 400 thousand jobs besides providing the largest share of food products to the local market that is expected to be more than 650 thousand tons by the plan completion.
